The Best Way to Lose Weight After Giving Birth

Having a baby is stressful enough without the extra pressure that is put on you to get back into pre-natal shape as soon as possible. Let’s face it you have enough on your plate!

For those that do want to lose weight after giving birth there are many different options you can use to get you back in shape while also taking into account the special needs that you have as a Mom.

There is no point working hard to lose weight after giving birth if it leaves you exhausted and unable to cope with baby. This is even more important if you are breast feeding, so here are some great compromises that you can make that will make the whole process of losing weight after giving birth easy, enjoyable and a bonding experience with your baby.

1 – Make exercise time Your time.

If you want to lose weight after  pregnancy then you need to exercise. This is not just a great way to get into shape, but the best way for your body to start the healing and recovery process.

Choosing an exercise program that you like and that you can do with baby is one of the best ways to get all the cardio that you need, while also making sure that you enjoy the experience. Getting out and about with baby in a stroller, dancing around the room with them or even attending special baby and you classes at the gym or swimming pool can be a fun and rewarding way to bond with baby while getting exercise.

For those that want to make their exercise ‘me’ time then arrange for someone to look after baby while you go to your favorite gym class or hit the stationary cycle with a set of headphones while baby is asleep. Even spending a quiet hour in the garden either with or without bub will help you to lose weight after giving birth.

2 – Eat Properly

Never has it been more important for you to be eating the right types of food. Your body has been through an ordeal, so it needs all the nutrition that you can give it to help it to heal. If you are breastfeeding you need extra calories to make sure that baby is also getting enough nutrition in their milk.

Concentrate on eating fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, low fat dairy foods, nuts and protein foods like that found in fish, eggs and lean red meat.

If you try to make up these calories with junk food then you are creating three problems, the first is that your baby will not be getting the right sort of nourishment from your milk. The second is that your metabolism will actually slow down if you fill your system with high starch, refined carbohydrate and sugary foods and as a result you will lose energy . This leads to the third effect which is that you will gain weight which will be much harder to shift later.

By eating properly you will provide your body and baby with everything that they need, you will have more energy, will heal more quickly and will find it easier to lose weight after giving birth.

Eating smaller meals more often is also a great way to ensure that your body keeps getting what it needs in amounts that are easily digested. This will help your digestion and as a result will help your metabolism to speed up, allowing you to burn fat faster.

3 – Get Support

One of the best things about looking to lose weight after giving birth is that there are thousands of Moms who are in exactly the same position as you all of whom are looking for ideas and motivation as they struggle to cope with their new body and their new baby.

In some cases these groups can get together and babysit each others children while members of the group get some time out for themselves. Some have an exercise program going where they meet at swimming pools, gyms or even on the side of the road with their strollers!

4 – Sleep

Isn’t is ironic that one of the best ways to lose weight after giving birth is to get a good nights sleep?

But this is so important. Sleep deprivation creates all sorts of havoc within our bodies, it affects our hormones, or moods, our immune system, digestive system, our brain and so many other important functions. Lack of sleep also makes our body store fat faster.

If we want to lose weight after giving birth we need to get as much sleep as possible, so that the body gets a chance to relax, heal and deal with the excess fat more efficiently. This is so important, particularly if your baby doesn’t sleep through the night yet.

There are a couple of ways that you can deal with this – either run night ‘shifts’ where your partner or your mother takes a turn feeding baby during the night. Or you really can sleep when baby sleeps, especially in the afternoons.

By watching what you eat, getting a healthy dose of exercise and as much sleep as possible you will find that it will be easy to lose weight after giving birth and get your body back into its pre-pregnancy shape!
